Top 5 First Dance Songs from the Late 1960s
Here are five of my favorite first dance songs that strike a nice balance between meaningful lyrics and a danceable beat. They also all happen to be from the late 1960s, making them perfect for a wedding that incorporates vintage themes.
1. “You’re All I Need to Get By” – Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell
You can almost never go wrong with Marvin and Tammi. This song has a dramatic build that feels really uplifting and will make everyone want to join you on the dance floor.
2. “Our House” – Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young
This is a winner for couples who have been together for a while and want to acknowledge and celebrate the life they’ve already built together. P.S. My husband and I danced to this song so I couldn’t not include it.
3. “God Only Knows” – The Beach Boys
Beautiful, meaningful lyrics, albeit somewhat dramatic. Also, be sure to note the use of sleigh bell-sounding percussion, which makes it feel a bit wintry. Also check out “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” as an alternative.
4. “Dream a Little Dream of Me” – The Mamas and the Papas
This song was originally recorded in the 1930s, but Mama Cass gave it soul.
5. “All You Need is Love” – The Beatles
This is a great option, but might work best for a musically-inclined couple, due to the asymmetrical timing.
