First Dance Song Review: Beyond by Leon Bridges
So you love “Beyond” by Leon Bridges and are considering dancing to this song for your first dance. Join the club!
Beyond was one of 2020’s most popular first dance songs at my wedding dance studio and online. Earlier this year, I shared a video on YouTube of one of my 2019 couples dancing to this song and the feedback has been so positive! I even received multiple requests to create an online tutorial based on this dance.

The Pros
There are lots of pros to this song. The lyrics are wedding-appropriate and very romantic: I'm scared to death that she might be it / That the love is real, that the shoe might fit / She might just be my everything and beyond (beyond) / Space and time in the afterlife / Will she have my kids? Will she be my wife? / She might just be my everything and beyond. It’s also very easy to dance to because the beat is very easy to hear, which makes it great for beginners who aren’t as confident picking out the beat.
The Cons
The major con for this song is that it’s on the slow side from a timing perspective. It can be difficult for some beginners to slow down enough to stay on the music. It’s also sung by a man and uses female pronouns, so it’s probably not the best choice for a same-sex couple. It’s also a tad on the long side, but that’s easily modified. I would suggest dancing through about 3 minutes of the song and then having your DJ fade it out.
The Recommendation
I love this song, so I completely recommend it as a first dance song choice, or for any part of your wedding ceremony. If you want to learn a version of the choreography you saw in the video and images above, you can enroll in my Beyond by Leon Bridges Beginner Online Wedding Dance Tutorial for just $149.
Unlike other tutorials that teach you a routine full of steps you’ll never use again, my system teaches you foundational steps that you will use for the rest of your life and how to put them together into beautiful and romantic choreography. The entire tutorial only takes a few hours to complete, so you can learn a natural-looking first dance even if you left it to the last minute.
The Lyrics
Don't wanna get ahead of myself
Feeling things I've never felt
It's kinda hard for me to explain
Her personality and everything
Brings me to my knees, oh
She shines me up like gold on my arm
I wanna take it slow but it's so hard
I love to see her face in daylight
It's more than just our bodies at night
But she's really tempting me, oh
Do you think I'm being foolish if I don't rush in?
I'm scared to death that she might be it
That the love is real, that the shoe might fit
She might just be my everything and beyond (beyond)
Space and time in the afterlife
Will she have my kids? Will she be my wife?
She might just be my everything and beyond
I wanna bring her 'round to meet ya
I think you'd like her kind demeanor
I know that Grandma would've loved her, like she was her own
She makes me feel home, oh
Do you think I'm being foolish if I don't rush in?
I'm scared to death that she might be it
That the love is real, that the shoe might fit
She might just be my everything and beyond (beyond)
Space and time in the afterlife
Will she have my kids? Will she be my wife?
She might just be my everything and beyond
I give up, I'm in love crying out to you
O me o my I can't explain
She might just be my everything
O me o my I can't explain
She might just be my everything
O me o my I can't explain
She might just be my everything
Do you think I'm being foolish if I don't rush in?
I'm scared to death that she might be it
That the love is real, that the shoe might fit
She might just be my everything and beyond (beyond)
Space and time in the afterlife
Will she have my kids? Will she be my wife?
She might just be my everything and beyond, yeah
O me o my I can't explain
She might just be my everything
O me o my I can't explain
She might just be my everything
O me o my I can't explain
She might just be my everything
She might just be mine, be mine
